Choosing your habits for a first season
Your first season will mostly teach you what you actually stick to. It pays to choose your habits well from the start.
How many habits
Two to four is ideal to begin with (the free plan allows four per season). Adding more does not earn more: you and your partner have the same total XP, whether you have three habits or ten. The XP is simply split across your habits. Three habits you keep beat eight you half-do.
Which ones
- Specific: “read 10 pages” rather than “read more”.
- Checkable: in the evening, you should be able to say whether it is done.
- Yours: each of you creates your own habits. Your partner does not choose for you, and vice versa.
A few examples that work well: run 20 minutes, drink 1.5 L of water, meditate 5 minutes, no screens in bed, 15 minutes of a language, tidy up for 10 minutes.
How often
In the app, a habit can count every day, on some days of the week, once a week or on chosen dates. Be honest with your schedule: a workout three days a week that you keep beats a daily one you drop after a week. Once the season starts, the frequency no longer changes, so take your time choosing it.
How much effort
Each habit has an effort level: small, standard or big. It splits a day’s XP between your habits: on that day, a run (big effort) weighs more than drinking water (small effort). It does not change what your day is worth, which stays the same for both of you.
Tie them to a moment
A habit sticks better when it follows something you already do: “after coffee”, “when I get home from work”, “before bed”. You can also set a reminder at the time that suits you.
Plan for the miss
It will happen. Duōdeka never takes XP away, and once your streak reaches 3 days, a joker automatically covers a missed day (two per season). One missed day does not cost you the season.
Before you start
- 2 to 4 specific habits;
- a realistic frequency;
- an honest effort level;
- a moment to fit each one in;
- some kindness for the off days.
